Five Tips for Navigating the Grocery Store

I personally am one of those people that LOVE grocery shopping. I find it therpautic to plan our my trip, roam the aisles and choose my fresh produce. I get serious satisfaction from seeing my fridge filled up on that first day after a haul. 

 

However, I know that you might be the person who DREADS grocery shopping. Maybe you feel like you wander the aisles without a plan or you end up with produce that spoils in your fridge before you're able to come up with a way to use it. Never fear: I'm here with my top tips for navigating the grocery store (so you don't waste time or your hard-earned $$): ⁣

1. Don't shop hungry. You may have heard this one before, but seriously. Remember the last time you went shopping while STARVING? So many unnecessary things go into your cart. So, just be sure to go after a meal if you can. ⁣

2. Shop the edges of the grocery store. You could spend hours in the center aisle of the grocery where most of the processed foods live (which is actually how stores are designed!). I recommend spending the majority of your time around the edges: fresh produce, meats, dairy, bread, etc. ⁣

3. Try to plan ahead. Take a few minutes before heading out to think about the meals you want to make and ingredients they require. Make a list where it's convenient for you (on a piece of paper or in your phone). That way, you can stick to your list instead of just wandering around the store. ⁣

4. Read ingredient labels. My easiest guidance when it comes to food labels: if you can't recognize the ingredients or pronounce them, it's likely you can find a less processed item. Try to pick items with short and recognizable ingredient lists (the fresher, the better). ⁣

5. Try not to buy "random" ingredients. If you pick up an ingredient that looks tasty but you aren't sure how you're going to prepare it, it's likely that it will end up going bad before you get around to it. Try to stick to your list if possible, and if you want to try new things, go in with a plan! ⁣
